LED fluorescent tube: energy-efficient alternative to the classic tube

Lighting technology has developed rapidly in recent years and more and more households and companies are turning to energy-efficient alternatives. The classic fluorescent tube was long prized for its high luminous efficacy, but now there is a much more modern and sustainable solution in the form of LED fluorescent tubes. But what exactly is the difference between the two technologies? What are the advantages of switching to LED? And is the investment also worthwhile financially? In this article, we get to the bottom of these questions and show why LED fluorescent tubes are the better choice for the future.

The classic fluorescent tube and its weaknesses

Fluorescent tubes, also known as neon tubes, have been a widely used solution for office buildings, workshops and industrial halls for decades. They are based on gas discharge technology, in which mercury vapor is excited by electrical voltage, generates ultraviolet radiation and is then converted into visible light by a fluorescent coating.

Despite their once high efficiency, fluorescent tubes have a number of disadvantages. One problem is their limited service life, which is usually between 10,000 and 15,000 hours. In addition, the quality of light deteriorates over time and many tubes flicker, especially when they are switched on or when the power decreases. Another major drawback is the high energy consumption, especially compared to modern LED tubes. In addition, the mercury vapors they contain pose a risk to the environment and disposal is therefore problematic. Their susceptibility to frequent switching on and off also often leads to premature failure.

Functionality and advantages of LED fluorescent tubes

LED fluorescent tubes use a completely different technology to classic fluorescent tubes. Instead of gas discharge, they rely on semiconductor components that convert electrical energy directly into light. These semiconductor diodes (LEDs) are much more efficient and generate less heat than conventional fluorescent tubes.

The advantages of this technology are numerous. Firstly, LED tubes have a considerably longer service life, which is often between 30,000 and 50,000 hours. This means that they last three to four times longer than their classic counterparts. They also require less power, which can significantly reduce energy costs. Another plus point is that LEDs switch to full brightness immediately, whereas older fluorescent tubes often have a short delay or flicker when starting up. The quality of light is also better in many cases and can be selected in different color temperatures depending on the model.

Energy saving: How much electricity can really be saved?

One major advantage of LED fluorescent tubes is their low energy consumption. While a classic fluorescent tube is operated with an output of around 36 watts, an LED alternative can achieve the same brightness with just 18 to 22 watts. This means a saving of almost 50 % without compromising the light output.

In the long term, these savings have a significant impact on the electricity bill. Let's assume a fluorescent tube runs for eight hours a day: A conventional 36-watt tube consumes around 105 kWh per year, while a comparable LED tube only requires around 52 kWh. At an electricity price of 30 cents per kWh, this results in annual savings of around 16 euros per tube - if there are several tubes in a building, this quickly adds up to several hundred euros.

Comparison of light quality and environmental friendliness

Another important aspect is the quality of light. LED fluorescent tubes offer more uniform illumination and better color rendering than classic fluorescent tubes. While conventional models often produce a cool and slightly flickering light, LED tubes are available in various color temperatures from warm white to neutral white to cool white. This allows them to be specifically adapted to the needs of the respective environment.

LED tubes also have a clear advantage in terms of environmental friendliness. They do not contain any toxic substances such as mercury and therefore do not have to be disposed of as hazardous waste. They also generate less heat, which can reduce the burden on air conditioning in rooms. Their high energy efficiency also helps to reduce COâ‚‚ emissions, as less electricity is consumed.

Installation and replacement: what needs to be considered?

Replacing an old fluorescent tube with an LED tube is straightforward in many cases, but there are a few things to bear in mind. In older luminaires with conventional ballasts (CCG) or low-loss ballasts (LVG), the starter, which is often supplied as a replacement with LED tubes, usually needs to be replaced. With electronic ballasts (EBs), it may be necessary to adapt the wiring or use compatible LED tubes.

Many manufacturers offer LED tubes that can be fitted directly into existing luminaires without the need for extensive modifications. Nevertheless, it is advisable to obtain detailed information about compatibility before installation or to consult a specialist to avoid problems.

Cost-benefit analysis: Is the switch worth it?

When comparing the purchase costs, it is noticeable that LED tubes are initially more expensive than conventional fluorescent tubes. However, in most cases this higher price is quickly amortized by the considerable savings in energy costs and the longer service life.

An example calculation illustrates this: Assume an LED tube costs 15 euros and a conventional fluorescent tube 5 euros. However, as the LED tube lasts around four times as long and consumes only half the electricity, the investment pays for itself after just a few years - and that's without the additional maintenance costs for the more frequent replacement of conventional tubes.

The future of lighting: why LEDs are the better choice

LED technology is increasingly becoming the standard in lighting. Thanks to continuous further development, LED tubes are becoming ever more efficient, durable and cost-effective. In addition, the legal requirements for energy-efficient lighting systems are increasing, meaning that conventional fluorescent tubes are increasingly disappearing from the market.

LED tubes also offer advantages in terms of smart lighting, as they are compatible with modern control systems. In combination with motion sensors or intelligent control systems, further energy-saving potential can be exploited.

The LED fluorescent tube is a modern, energy-efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to the classic fluorescent tube. It offers a longer service life, better light quality and considerable savings on electricity costs. Even if the initial purchase costs are higher, the changeover pays for itself after just a few years. In view of ever stricter environmental regulations and the continuous development of LED technology, it is only a matter of time before conventional fluorescent tubes disappear from the market for good. So if you want to invest in the future, you should consider switching to LED fluorescent tubes now.
