Protection classes and IP protection types: What do IP44, IP65 & co. mean?

Moisture-proof luminaires are equipped with certain protection classes that indicate how resistant they are to moisture and foreign bodies. The so-called IP protection class (International Protection) consists of two digits, each of which describes different criteria.

The first digit indicates protection against foreign bodies, with 0 meaning no protection and 6 meaning completely dustproof. The second digit describes the protection against water, with 0 indicating no protection and 8 complete protection against permanent immersion.

The following protection classes are particularly relevant for use in damp rooms: IP44 stands for splash water protection and is often sufficient for bathroom lighting outside directly wet areas. IP54 offers additional protection against dust, which can be advantageous in cellars and garages. IP65 is dustproof and protected against water jets, which is particularly advantageous for outdoor areas or very damp basements. Particularly robust models are available with IP67, which can even withstand temporary submersion.

LED or classic lighting: which technology is best?

When choosing a moisture-proof luminaire, the question often arises: should it be classic lighting with fluorescent tubes or halogen lamps, or modern LED technology? The advantages of LED luminaires clearly outweigh the disadvantages.

LEDs have very high energy efficiency and consume up to 80 % less electricity than conventional light bulbs or fluorescent tubes. They also have a significantly longer service life, often over 50,000 operating hours, which means they need to be replaced less frequently. This is a great advantage, especially in damp rooms that are difficult to access, such as basements or garages.

Another plus point is the immediate brightness of LEDs, whereas classic fluorescent tubes often require a short warm-up time. This is particularly practical in garages when a good view is needed quickly. In addition, LED moisture-proof luminaires are usually more robust, as they do not contain sensitive glass tubes that can break. In the long term, LEDs are therefore the better choice.

There are special lighting requirements in the bathroom, especially near the shower, bathtub and washbasin. Here it is important to pay attention to the correct IP protection class, as water and moisture can endanger the electrical system. For directly wet areas, luminaires should have at least IP65, while IP44 is often sufficient for other areas.

The design also plays a role. While functional lights are usually used in basements and garages, bathrooms can be more visually appealing. Recessed LED spotlights or simple, modern moisture-proof luminaires with a pleasant light color (3000-4000 Kelvin) create a homely atmosphere. Dimmable lighting can also increase comfort.

Installation and maintenance: tips for long-lasting and safe lighting

A moisture-proof luminaire should be installed safely and professionally. Especially in wet areas such as bathrooms, it is advisable to consult a specialist to avoid potential hazards due to incorrect wiring or inadequate protection. In garages and basements, experienced DIY enthusiasts can often do the installation themselves as long as the correct protection classes are observed.

Maintenance is hardly necessary with modern LED lights as they have a long service life. Nevertheless, they should be checked regularly for cleanliness, as dust and dirt often accumulate in cellars and garages. Occasional cleaning with a dry or slightly damp cloth extends the service life and ensures a consistently high quality of light.
