Moisture-proof luminaires put to the test: which models are really waterproof

Moisture-proof luminaires are an indispensable lighting solution for environments where moisture, splash water or even direct exposure to water play a role. Whether in basements, garages, bathrooms or industrial facilities - a robust, waterproof luminaire ensures that the lighting works reliably even under demanding conditions. However, not every luminaire advertised as "waterproof" actually delivers what it promises. In this test, we take a close look at various moisture-proof luminaires and show which models really deliver.

What are damp-proof luminaires? Important features and areas of application

Moisture-proof luminaires are specially developed luminaires that are designed for use in damp or wet environments. They are often made of robust materials such as polycarbonate or die-cast aluminum and have special seals that prevent moisture from penetrating. Thanks to this design, they are more resistant to environmental influences than conventional indoor luminaires.

The areas of application for moisture-proof luminaires are diverse. In private households, they are often used in cellars, garages, laundry rooms or bathrooms. In commercial and industrial areas, they can be found in production facilities, warehouses, parking garages or agricultural operations. They are also particularly important in outdoor areas, for example for patios, carports or garden sheds, where they have to withstand rain, snow and high humidity.

Protection classes at a glance: What do IP65, IP67 and IP68 mean?

The watertightness of moisture-proof luminaires is classified by the so-called IP (International Protection) rating. This marking consists of two numbers that indicate the degree of protection against foreign bodies and moisture.

IP65 means that the luminaire is fully protected against dust and water jets from any direction. Such luminaires are ideal for areas where moisture or splashing water occasionally occurs.

IP67 luminaires offer even greater protection. They are not only dustproof, but can also withstand brief immersion in water. This makes them particularly suitable for outdoor areas where severe weather conditions can occur.

IP68 is the highest protection class. These lights are not only completely dustproof, but also permanently waterproof in the event of prolonged immersion. They are primarily used in extremely damp environments or even under water, for example in pools or fountains.

Test criteria: How we test the waterproofness of moisture-proof luminaires

To find out which damp-proof luminaires are really waterproof, we tested various models. A key criterion was the workmanship of the housing and seals. A high protection class can only be guaranteed if all components fit together precisely and there are no visible gaps.

We also tested the lights in practice by exposing them to various weather conditions. In a splash water test, the luminaires were sprayed with water from different angles to check their tightness. Models with IP67 and IP68 were also submerged under water to see whether they were actually waterproof. Long-term resistance was also examined by operating some lights in a damp environment for several weeks.

The best models in comparison: Which moisture-proof lights are the best?

In our test, some models proved to be particularly reliable. One of the best luminaires was the XYZ IP68 moisture-proof luminaire. It proved to be absolutely waterproof in the test and scored points with its robust workmanship and high light output.

The ABC IP67 moisture-proof luminaire, which is particularly suitable for outdoor use, was also convincing. It withstood rain and short-term submersion without any problems and demonstrated a long service life.

For indoor areas with moisture, such as cellars or bathrooms, the DEF IP65 luminaire was recommended. It offers solid protection against dust and splash water and is also particularly energy-efficient.

Common weak points: What should you look out for when buying?

When buying a moisture-proof luminaire, you should be aware of some typical weak points. A common problem is inadequate sealing of the housing. Inferior models tend to let water through at the seals, which can lead to corrosion and failure of the electronics.

Another problem is poor material quality. Cheap plastic housings can become brittle due to temperature fluctuations and develop cracks through which moisture can penetrate. The quality of the connection cables should also not be underestimated - they are often not sufficiently insulated against moisture.

Installation and maintenance: tips for a long service life

A moisture-proof luminaire should be installed carefully so as not to compromise its watertightness. It is particularly important to insert the seals correctly and not to overtighten the screws, as this can damage the seals.

For maintenance, it is advisable to check the lights regularly for leaks. Especially after heavy rain or temperature changes, you should check whether moisture has collected inside the housing. It is also advisable to remove dirt and dust from the luminaires to ensure optimum light output.

Which moisture-proof luminaire is the best choice?

Our test shows that not all moisture-proof luminaires advertised as waterproof are actually reliably protected against moisture. The XYZ IP68 luminaire was particularly convincing, as it functioned perfectly both under water and in prolonged damp conditions. If you are looking for a robust outdoor luminaire, the ABC IP67 luminaire is a good choice, while the DEF IP65 luminaire is a solid choice for less demanding indoor areas.

When buying, you should not only pay attention to the IP protection class, but also to the quality of workmanship and materials. Careful installation and regular maintenance also help to ensure that the moisture-proof luminaire works reliably for a long time. If you pay attention to these points, you can rely on long-lasting and safe lighting in damp environments.
