What does LED mean?

LED stands for Light Emitting Diode.

LED lamps and luminaires contain various electronic components. Under unfavorable conditions, these components can develop noise. In cases of resonance, even small noises can cause an audible effect. Possible influencing factors are the installation, the design of the base and the luminaire (acoustic resonance effect) as well as the dimmer or transformer (harmonic or electronic resonance).

How difficult is it to replace a conventional incandescent lamp into an innovative LED lamp?

Replacing a conventional lamp with an LED lamp is not difficult. The replacement is straightforward, but if in doubt, enlist the help of a professional (electrician). The replacement is the same as replacing a normal light bulb. Unscrew the conventional bulb from the socket and replace it with an LED lamp. The LED lamp must have the same socket as the previous lamp. Note the dimensions of the conventional incandescent lamp and the new LED lamp. When replacing the bulbs, remember to turn off the electrical system for safety.

How does an LED lamp produce the white light?

A light emitting diode (LED) can do anything but white! However, in order to make the LED shine white anyway, the manufacturers use a trick using blue LED chips. The emitted blue light is transformed into longer wavelength light by a photoluminescent dye (phosphor). This yellowish luminescent layer in combination with a blue LED chip produces a broad spectrum of wavelengths that is perceived as white by the human eye. In practice, the sapphire substrate initially preferred for the luminescent layer can now be replaced by the less expensive silicon.

What is the payback period of an LED lamp compared to a conventional incandescent lamp?

In view of ever increasing and also varying electricity prices, but at the same time meanwhile favorable prices for LED lamps, there is no general answer to the payback period of an LED lamp. But since conventional lamps have almost disappeared from the market anyway, the calculation will soon be invalid. The fact is that LED lamps produce up to +/-80% less power consumption. If one considers the usually much longer life span of a LED lamp, the meanwhile developed characteristics of the bulb character, the choice falls on the LED lamp.

The advantages of LED lamp are:

  • LED lamps are very long-lasting, up to 15,000 hrs. even up to 60,000 hrs. possible with high-quality LEDs
  • Full brightness in the shortest time
  • Energy consumption up to 80% less than conventional incandescent lamps
  • Lower heat generation, hardly more than hand-warm
  • Color selection, there are a variety of light colors and a wide range of white light
  • Very robust, shockproof and even suitable for machine and vehicle lights
  • Dimming (LED lamp) is now possible in all areas
  • Dimming (LED module) can be turned off and on stress-free
  • LED lamps are sustainable and environmentally friendly, these can be disposed of as electronic waste due to their electronic components and increasingly recycled

Which lamp socket is available for LED lamps?

  • E27 LED lamps
  • E14 LED lamps
  • GU10 LED spotlights
  • GU5.3 LED spotlights

Are LED lamps similar in design to conventional incandescent lamps?

Due to the advancement of LED technology, LED lamps nowadays resemble more and more their classic incandescent predecessors in their design. Equipped with the most common bases E14, E27 and GU10, almost all household applications can be replaced by LED lamps. While the designs of LED lamps and conventional incandescent lamps hardly differ, the technology inside the LED lamp looks quite different. An integrated ballast is required to operate the LEDs. An integrated heat sink is also required to prevent the electronics from overheating.

Base or socket?

On the ever faster growing market, there are more and more lamps with similar bases, which at first glance do not always look the same. The two terms "base" and "socket" can quickly be confused. The question arises, what actually is the lamp base and which part is the lamp socket?

The lower part of a lamp is called the socket. This is responsible for making contact between the bulb and the light fixture.

The socket is the counterpart to the base and is located inside the bulb. Therefore, the base and socket must be of the same type.

Which groups of sockets are there?

  • Screw base (E14, E27, E40)
  • pin bases (G23, G24d, G24q, 2GX7, 2G7, 2GX11, 2G11, G53)
  • pin base (G4, GU4, GU5.3, G6.35, GX6.35, GY6.35, G9, GU9)
  • Sleeve base (S14d, S14s)
  • Tube socket (T5 G5, T8 G13, R7s)
  • Bayonet base (GU10, GZ10, GX53, B15d, B22d)

What are Filament LED Lamps?

An LEDfilament light bulb is an electric light source in which LED filaments are housed in a glass bulb similar to an incandescent lamp.

The LED filament light bulb is very reminiscent of the charm of the old incandescent lamp. Due to the lack of a heat sink, the light is also cast to the rear. Dark shadows are now also a thing of the past with LED lamps. The lamp produces a pleasant warm white light and creates a cozy atmosphere. With its wide beam angle, the lamp is ideal for illuminating rooms.

LED filament lamps consist largely of the same components as classic incandescent lamps with carbon filament or tungsten filament. These are:

  • The entire lamp base, whose metallic part of the outer skin represents the electrical contacts.
  • The glass lamp base, with a vacuum-tight feed-through of the power supply to the actual luminous components, in this case an array of LED filaments
  • An internal gas
  • The glass outer bulb

In addition, LED filament lamps also contain a small power supply unit, typically built into the lamp base, which converts the AC voltage from the mains supply to the DC voltage required to operate the light-emitting diodes. Due to the length and orientation of the LED filaments, the appearance of LED filament lamps when switched on is more reminiscent of a carbon filament lamp than an incandescent lamp with a tungsten filament.

LED filament lamps are available with clear/matte glass or gold glass bulbs in dimmable or non-dimmable versions to provide the right lighting ambience in living spaces.

The new energy label

Due to the new regulations of the EU Commission, regarding efficient and climate-friendly lighting, the labeling and energy efficiency of luminaires and illuminants is newly regulated. Therefore, since December 2019, the new EU regulations on ecodesign and labeling of light sources are in force. Now they are being implemented step by step.

In brief:

New energy efficiency classes on the energy label. Instead of the previous scale from A++ to E, the new energy label will now be displayed between A and G with immediate effect. An additional QR code on the energy label will allow all consumers to provide additional information from the European product database, also called "EPREL", via their smartphone.
